Man charged with transporting illegal immigrants

JACKSON — A federal grand jury has indicted a man on charges of transporting illegal immigrants.

Court records say Mario Carballo was pulled over in Rankin County on Interstate 20 on Nov. 21. Court records say three people ran from the minivan when immigration officials arrived and six others were detained.

A check determined that Carballo is from El Salvador, had protective status in the United States and had been living in Los Angeles or Texas. The other six were illegal immigrants.

Carballo allegedly told authorities they were headed to Maryland to find work and he was only letting them tag along. He was indicted Tuesday. His lawyer didn’t immediately respond to a message.
