Man dies in Marshall County shooting

HOLLY SPRINGS — Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson says a local homeowner has shot a man who was allegedly stealing scrap metal from the rural home.

Dickerson tells The Commercial Appeal that 56-year-old Lorenzo Gipson was pronounced dead at the scene of Thursday’s shooting off Mississippi Highway 310 near the Marshall-Lafayette county line.

Dickerson says property owner Andra Raymond Matthews told investigators that he caught Gipson trying to steal some scrape metal and Gipson came at him with a hatchet.

Dickerson says Matthews has complained several times about people trying to steal old refrigerators and other old scrap metal on his land.

No charges have been filed as the investigation continues.

Mississippi law gives property owners increased protection when using deadly force to defend against trespassers.
