VERONA – An Aberdeen man was fatally shot by a Verona police officer during an altercation on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green, the man fatally shot was Henry Montgomery, 31, of Aberdeen.
Verona police responded to a reported disturbance on Mattox Road near the Verona City Park around 1 p.m., according to Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson. The responding Verona officers identified the suspects, both males, in a red car on Mattox Road.
The Verona police initiated a traffic stop on Mattox Road, at which point some sort of altercation ensued, according to Johnson. One of the officers shot and killed Montgomery, while the other suspect was detained and taken to Lee County Jail. The fatally wounded suspect had one visible bullet wound according to Johnson.
The sheriff’s department responded to a call for assistance by Verona police just before 1:30. They arrived after the shooting.
Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the traffic stop and resulting shooting. The names of the arrested suspect and the officers involved have not been released.
Johnson said at this time it is clear two civilians and two Verona police officers were involved. He also confirmed the suspects appear to have exited the red vehicle during the traffic stop since the vehicle and deceased suspect were on separate sides of Mattox Road.
Many neighbors looked on from the park but all who were asked said they arrived after the shooting to see what happened.
Generally, when one law enforcement agency is involved in a shooting, another agency will investigate the incident to offer accountability.
Verona Police Chief Anthony Anderson did not return calls.
