RIPLEY – A Ripley man has been formally charged in the shooting of two men on Wednesday.

Isidro Mercado, 26, was arraigned and charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder on Thursday at the Tippah County Courthouse.

The shooting occurred Wednesday morning at 206 Ashwood Drive, according to an official statement from the Ripley Police Department.

According to the statement, RPD received a 911 call of shots fired at the address about 6 a.m. When officers arrived, they found Ernesto Chaires, 35, of Ripley, dead at the scene.

Jose Morales, 34, of Blue Mountain, was found across the street with a gunshot wound and trauma to the head. Morales was airlifted to The Regional Medical Center in Memphis and was in critical condition Wednesday.

Mercado was not given bond and is being held in the Tippah County Jail.
