Man gets 20 years in prison for killing Marine vet

PURVIS – A 21-year-old Lumberton man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the shooting death of a Marine veteran in 2009.

Richard Sandifer was sentenced Friday by state Judge Anthony Mozingo. It was the maximum sentence after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter this week in a plea bargain.

Sandifer initially was charged with murder in the 2009 shooting death of Bryan King, 41. King was a 20-year Marine veteran who had served two tours of duty in overseas conflicts. He died from a single gunshot wound on May 16, 2009, in the parking lot of a Lumberton apartment complex.

Sandifer will be eligible for parole. Separately, he faces charges of carjacking, robbery and first-degree arson in a separate incident on May 16, 2009.
