TUPELO – The man killed while crossing North Gloster Street on Monday has been identified as 57-year-old Sammy Keith Smith of Tupelo.
Lee County Coroner Carolyn Gillentine-Green said Smith was pronounced dead at that North Mississippi Medical Center at about 9 p.m., hours after being struck by a vehicle near Woody’s restaurant.
Police are still investigating the accident, which happened around 6:30 p.m. Lt. Tim Clouse said he does not think the incident was intentional.
The speed limit on Gloster Street is 45 mph. He said accidents like Monday’s usually occur because pedestrians aren’t paying attention.
A pedestrian was killed crossing North Gloster Street near Milam Elementary School in 2008 and another was hit and killed crossing McCullough Boulevard after leaving a night club last year.
Smith is at least the third pedestrian killed while crossing a street in Lee County since December. Shannon High School student 16-year-old Sadarius Johnson was killed while trying to cross Highway 145 in December. Less than a month later Melvin Houston, 36, also was killed crossing the same highway.
Gillentine-Green said there were only two pedestrians killed in 2009 countywide.
