Man pleads guilty in Attala Co. slaying

KOSCIUSKO, Miss. (AP) — An Attala County man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in a 2012 fatal shooting.

Prosecutors say 43-year old Barry Ware of Sallis entered the plea Tuesday in Attala County Circuit Court. He had been scheduled for trial next week in the death of 24-year-old Cedric Sharkey.

Ware is one of two men charged in the Jan. 7, 2012, slaying of Sharkey.

Prosecutors say the shooting appeared to have occurred after Ware and the other man confronted Sharkey, thinking he might have been involved in stealing iron or other scrap metal.

Prosecutors say Sharkey died of a gunshot wound in the chest.
