Man to plead guilty to possessing khat

OXFORD— A man is scheduled to plead guilty in Mississippi to possession of khat, an illegal African drug.

A filing in federal court says Fahmi Kassim is scheduled for a change of plea hearing Aug. 9 in U.S. District Court in Oxford. The indictment in the case says Kassim possessed the drug with intent to distribute it in August 2009.

He has pleaded not guilty.

Khat, also known as cathonine, is popular in parts of the Middle East and Africa, where users chew the leaf to release stimulants that produce a mild high.
