PRAIRIE – A man arrested in connection with a Chicago shooting also had pit bulls that authorities think were used for dogfighting, police said Wednesday.
Working with the U.S. Marshals Service, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department arrested Quincy Evans, 26, at his residence at 10081 Blackjack Road on Wednesday morning. According to Monroe County Sheriff Andy Hood, Evans was charged with murder stemming from a gang-related shooting in 2005, after which he moved to southwestern Monroe County.
“Evans allegedly shot and killed a person in a gang-related incident in Chicago,” Hood said. “He was indicted by a grand jury in May of 2005. We received a call from the U.S. Marshals regarding Evans’ possible whereabouts. We moved in on him after surrounding his dwelling with help from the U.S. Marshals office and the West Point Police Department. Evans was arrested without incident.”
Hood said he and deputies were completely caught off guard when they found what they believe is a pit bull-fighting operation on the property.
“We had no idea this was going on,” Hood said. “We have been trying to bust a pit bull operation for months, but we received reports it was happening in Clay and Chickasaw counties. We were able to get rid of one in our county.”
Sheriff’s deputies said Evans had 13 pit bull dogs that appeared to be used in a dogfighting ring.
Also seized were treadmill devices that are used to strengthen animals that are used for fighting.
Deputies contacted the Amory Humane Society, which took custody of the animals. More arrests are expected in connection with the dogfighting.
Authorities also confiscated several weapons during Evans’ arrest including two handguns and SKS assault rifle. He was a convicted felon, so the weapon charges will be heightened.
Evans is being held in the Monroe County jail, awaiting extradition back to Illinois.
