TUPELO – A Blue Springs man had surgery Tuesday and Wednesday after a traffic accident that also involved his motorcycle-riding dog.
Bervia Hooghouse, 53, has become a Northeast Mississippi celebrity with help from Blue, a 6-year-old blue heeler, who rides in a sidecar.
At about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, the pair were driving on McCullough Boulevard in front of the Motel 6 when another vehicle hit their motorcycle.
“It was a flat-bed truck, the kind that carries cars,” said Hooghouse’s wife, Donna. “The driver said he just didn’t see him.”
Hooghouse had surgery on one of his legs on Tuesday at North Mississippi Medical Center. His wife said he was expected in surgery on Wednesday. Several ribs and his sternum were broken, and his lungs were damaged.
“They say he is going to be fine,” Donna Hooghouse said, “but it will be a long rehabilitation.”
Blue was thrown free of the wreckage and ran off. Police, friends, family and people from the Tupelo-Lee Humane Society searched for the dog.
“They found him on Gloster Street. Thank God he didn’t get run over,” she said. “He went quite a ways. He was just scared.”
She said Blue didn’t appear to be injured, but she planned to take him to a veterinarian for a full checkup.
