Desmond D. Johnson softly said yes sir and quietly answered Judge Greg Brown’s questions Thursday afternoon at his initial appearance in city court.

Johnson, 24, of 204 Woodale Cove surrendered to police Wednesday and has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of a Lee county man in Pontotoc Monday night.

Judge Brown told Johnson he has been charged with murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

Judge Brown set his bond at $1 million. “If you are unable to make bond by November 2, you are entitled to a preliminary hearing if you wish,” Brown said. Otherwise, Johnson will be bound over until the January grand jury session.

Johnson is accused of shooting Shaun Duane Walton, 25, at 8 p.m. this past Monday while at the Grove Apartments off West Reynolds Extended in Pontotoc.

Pontotoc Police Chief Larry Poole said Walton was shot with possibly a small-caliber handgun in the chest.

Poole said Walton, who lived at 120 County Road 51 in Lee County, was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle.

Pontotoc County coroner Kim Bedford said she pronounced Walton dead of a gunshot wound at the Pontotoc emergency room. His body was taken to Jackson for an autopsy.

Poole said Johnson called to let police know where he was. No motive has been confirmed.
