TUPELO – Charlie “Chuck” Williams, a traffic control supervisor in public works, was named public works’ interim department head Tuesday.
Mayor Jason Shelton nominated him for the post and the City Council unanimously approved the move.
Sid Russell, director of public works, announced on Aug. 28 his retirement in mid-October after 25 years with the city. Since then Russell has used his remaining vacation time until his official retirement.
In his letter announcing his retirement, Russell recommended a different public works employee as department head – Susan Morris, assistant director, who has been employed with the city a year longer than Russell.
Williams, one of four supervisors in public works, will serve as interim department head for an indefinite length of time.
“He may do so good that we decide to keep him there,” Shelton said.
Shelton named Williams’ more than 20 years of experience in the department and strong working knowledge of public works as reasons for selecting him for the interim position.
Russell said he has “all of the confidence in the world” in Williams.
Shelton said he will begin formally naming other department heads at the Oct. 1 City Council meeting.
