MBI to review dentist’s death

TUPELO – The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will conduct an independent review of the investigation into a local dentist’s death.
The independent review comes after Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green changed Dr. Tracy Hodges’ death certificate from suicide to undetermined.
The Tupelo Police Department investigated Hodges’ May 29 death and ruled it a suicide.
Hodges’ death certificate said it was a suicide from the time the investigation ended until Sept. 28, when Green changed it to undetermined and the cause of death from “self-inflicted gunshot wound to mouth,” to “gunshot wound to mouth.”
Capt. Rusty Haynes, of Tupelo Police’s Criminal Investigation Division, said his unit is satisfied with its investigation and will fully cooperate as MBI reviews the case file to make sure there wasn’t anything missed or overlooked.
A representative from the District Attorney’s Office said the MBI will review the investigation and Tupelo Police are cooperating.
“The District Attorney’s Office has full confidence in the competence of the Tupelo Police Department investigators and this is just an independent review,” said District Attorney investigator Paul Howell.
