CORINTH – Alcorn County supervisors will pay a $15,000 fine to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality for violations at the county’s rubbish landfill.
According to an April 16 letter from MDEQ outlining details of the violations and agreement on the fine payment, the violations had been rectified and the landfill once again in compliance as of a Jan. 23 inspection.
The county recently negotiated and is preparing to finalize an agreement with Waste Connections Inc. which will place management of the rubbish landfill site on Farmington Road and the waste transfer station on South Harper Road under the company’s management as of July 1.
The $15,000 civil penalty imposed by MDEQ will be paid in two installments of $7,500 each, the first due to be paid within 45 days and the second within 90 days of signing the agreed order.
