MDOT issues statement regarding the Tallahatchie River Bridge

By MDOT Press Release

JACKSON – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) would like to issue a statement regarding the news release below. The Tallahatchie River Bridge on MS 7 in Lafayette County is scheduled to be let to contract in January of 2013. The existing bridge is considered “structurally deficient”. We want to assure the public that “structurally deficient” does not mean that the bridge is unsafe.

“It is a term used in the bridge inspection community to help establish priorities for bridge replacement and/or bridge maintenance activities so that the bridge does not deteriorate to the point that it would be deemed unsafe.” says Mark McConnell, MDOT Chief Engineer. “We are fortunate to be able to eliminate this older truss bridge and replace it with a new bridge built to current design standards. The steel truss members of the existing bridge have been hit by over height vehicles for years, incurring expensive repairs. The new bridge will provide safe travel over the Tallahatchie River for many years to come.”
