Meridian declines to lift ban on fortune telling

MERIDIAN – The Meridian City Council has again declined to lift its ban on fortune telling.
The council voted 3-2 on Tuesday to keep the ban. It is the third time council members have voted on the issue.
Fortune telling establishment have been banned in the city for decades. The issue only came up over the past few months because someone was interested in opening such a business inside the city.
City Attorney Ronnie Walton has told council members similar ordinances have been deemed a violation of the First Amendment.
Walton said there is a state law giving municipalities the authority to control or ban fortune telling. If the city ordinance is challenged in court, Walton said it is unclear whether the state law would be implicated as well.
