Methodist Senior Services celebrates with conferences

In honor of its 50th birthday, Methodist Senior Services has a gift for thousands of its closest friends.
The organization, which operates Traceway Retirement Community in Tupelo and 11 other senior living campuses around the state, is hosting three free Celebrations of Aging in Tupelo, Jackson and Hattiesburg.
“We wanted to give something back to the elders and the state,” said Renee Reid, director of marketing for Methodist Senior Services, which was sparked by the need to do more for older adults at a 1962 state conference.
The Tupelo conference will be May 14 at the BancorpSouth Conference Center. The Jackson conference is set for May 10; the Hattiesburg conference will be May 11.
The conferences will be a mix of learning and fun including estate planning and hobbies such as cooking, gardening and fishing. The conference also will feature a Wii bowling tournament.
“I’ve heard from two or three groups that they’re practicing,” Reid said.
At all three conferences, entertainment will start with Lance Moore of the gospel group Paid in Full. Nationally known humorist Jeanne Robertson, who is heard daily on XM and Sirius, will be the keynote speaker.
“She’s is so funny,” said Reid, noting that many of Robertson’s stories come from everyday life.
But as excited as people are about Moore and Robertson, it is the final entertainer of the conference that has drawn the biggest reaction, Reid said.
“When I tell people that we’re closing with Guy Hovis,” Reid said, “I get squeals.”
At the Tupelo conference, participants will get a bonus. Lunch will be served at the Tupelo Automobile Museum and conference participants will be able to enjoy the exhibits before the return to the BancorpSouth Conference Center to enjoy the rest of the event, Reid said.
All told, Methodist Senior Services is anticipating 3,000 participants at the three conferences. The conference is free, but reservations are required because space is limited. They can be made by calling (888) 488-4414 or (662) 844-8977
Partnerships with several companies, including Humana and Renasant Bank, have allowed Methodist Senior Services to offer the entertainment and lunch without charge, Reid said.
