TUPELO – As of 4 p.m. Monday, only one person had been killed in a Memorial Day weekend car accident, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
The enforcement period from Friday through Sunday resulted in 63 traffic accidents with16 injuries and the one fatality that was in Hattiesburg.
The driver was wasn’t wearing a seat belt in the accident, according to Trooper Ray Hall.
After having a total of nine fatalities statewide during the Memorial Day weekend last year, Hall said it was a relief to have just one.
Nearly 5,300 tickets were issued, of which 129 were for DUI.
