D’IBERVILLE, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi Gulf Coast teenager has drowned a day after he graduated from high school.

WLOX-TV reports 18-year-old Johnny Le drowned Tuesday in the Tchoutacabouffa (CHOO-ta-ca-buff) River. He had graduated Monday from St. Martin High School.

D’Iberville Police Lt. Terry Hines says Le and a friend were swimming when Le went under and didn’t come back up. Bystanders and Le’s friends tried unsuccessfully to rescue him.

Divers from D’Iberville and Harrison County recovered Le’s body about an hour later.

Hines says the Harrison County coroner’s office will conduct an autopsy.
