Miss. judge mulls arguments on 'personhood' issue

JACKSON — Hinds County Circuit Judge Malcolm Harrison is giving no indication of when he might rule on a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of a proposed “personhood” amendment to the Mississippi Constitution.

The amendment would define life as beginning at conception. Petitioners have gathered enough signatures to put it on the November 2011 statewide ballot.

However, opponents argued in court Thursday that initiatives cannot be used to rewrite the state Bill of Rights, and they believe the personhood amendment would do just that.

Steve Crampton, an attorney for the amendment’s sponsor, says that “no right is tinkered with” under the proposal.
