Miss. labor leaders support Wis. state employees

JACKSON — Mississippi labor leaders say they’re supporting government employees in Wisconsin, where the new governor is trying to erase collective bargaining.

About 60 people rallied Monday at the Mississippi Capitol in Jackson — two days after similar rallies attracted thousands in some other states.

Brenda Scott, president of the Mississippi Alliance of State Employees, says workers in Mississippi already lack collective bargaining, and they’re tired of being portrayed as “faceless bureaucrats.”

Robert Shaffer, president of the Mississippi AFL-CIO, says if workers’ rights are diminished in one place, they can be diminished anywhere.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour says he supports Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a fellow Republican.
