Mississippi delegation reacts to State of the Union

JACKSON — Republican members of Mississippi’s congressional delegation say the approach to the nation’s debt problem that President Barack Obama outlined in his State of the Union address won’t get the job done.

Rep. Alan Nunnelee says Obama doesn’t recognize the extent of the debt crisis and out-of-control spending. Sen. Thad Cochran says the government needs to be run in a way that encourages economic activity by providing certainty, stability and low taxes.

Sen. Roger Wicker says the president missed an opportunity to outline a plan to cut federal spending and put the country on a fiscally-responsible path. Rep. Gregg Harper says he was disappointed Obama said little about energy independence. Rep. Steven Palazzo did not issue a comment.

Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson praised Obama’s steps to improve infrastructure and cybersecurity.
