TUPELO – Heavy machine operators for the Mississippi Department of Transportation will put their skills to the test Thursday morning to see who is the best.
Maintenance technicians from MDOT’s first district will compete to represent the district in the statewide MDOT Equipment Operators Roadeo in Biloxi next month. State winners advance to a regional round held in West Virginia.
The competition will be held at the district office on North Gloster Street and is open to the public.
The events will be lowboy truck and trailer, single-axle dump truck, backhoe, tandem axle dump truck, tractor bushhog and motor patrol.
The bushhog operators will complete forward and backward s-turns through cones, and backhoe operators will see who can scoop up a ping-pong ball and place it in a cup.
“It’s about promoting safety,” said Jeff Humber of MDOT. “They do a lot of work honing their skills and this is just a fun event, a good chance for camaraderie and family time.”
