Mississippi House Oks bills aimed at elementary reading

JACKSON — The Mississippi House on Monday passed bills designed to put more emphasis on teaching reading in kindergarten through third grade.

One of the bills, House Bill 890, was amended to add a $5,000 across-the-board pay raise for teachers, starting July 1.

But, the pay-raise proposal is unlikely to survive the entire legislative process because it hasn’t been included in budget talks over the past several months.

Education bills that have passed the House will move to the Senate for more debate.

A separate bill that passed the House on Monday, House Bill 955, also dealt with strengthening reading lessons in early grades — but it did not include the teacher pay raise proposal.
