Mississippi leaders react to the ruling
n Gov. Haley Barbour: “Hopefully, the judge’s ruling will go into effect quickly and be upheld on appeal. The moratorium is bad policy.”
n U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker: “If left in place, the deepwater drilling moratorium has potential to become the third wave of this disaster. Thousands of people along the Gulf Coast will lose their jobs, and the cost of energy for all Americans will skyrocket. The administration lacked justification for the ban, and now has an opportunity to right this wrong.”
n U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran: “The blanket moratorium on deepwater drilling added hardship to an already difficult situation on the Gulf Coast. As I understand it, the judge’s ruling seems sound. I hope the administration will now take a more reasoned approach to determining the true risks associated with offshore energy exploration in the Gulf.”
n U.S. Rep. Travis Childers: “In light of the horrible situation in the Gulf, we need to carefully assess the potential risks of new drilling and ensure that we always employ the most effective safeguards. But we also need to be able to continue safe and practical energy exploration efforts to ensure an adequate energy supply, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and strengthen national security.”
