Mississippi legislators issue statements on Arizona shooting

Northeast Mississippi’s legislators are saddened by the Saturday shooting in Tuscon, Ariz., and are thinking of their colleague, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was critically injured in the attack.
Travis Childers, former congressman for Mississippi’s 1st District, said he is fortunate to have gotten to know Giffords while their offices shared a floor in the Longworth House Office Building in Washington, D.C.
“Gabby’s optimism during even the most trying days was an inspiration to all,” he said. “Specifically, I remember her tolerance for others and their opinions, which is perhaps why the nature of today’s tragedy is especially troubling to me.”
Childers called the attack “shocking” and “senseless.”
“During this difficult time for Arizona and our entire country, my thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who were killed, and with Gabby and the others who were injured in hoping for their swift recovery,” he said.
Congressman Alan Nunnelee said he hopes God can bring the victims of the shooting peace in this time.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic shooting of my colleague Representative Giffords and the other victims in Tucson today,” Nunnelee said. “My thoughts and prayers are with their families.”
