Mom, disabled son slain in Gulfport, suspect dead

GULFPORT — A woman and her 21-year-old wheelchair-bound son were found shot to death inside their Gulfport home Monday and the man who police suspect killed them was later found dead, authorities said.

Harris County Coroner Gary Hargrove said Paul Buckman, 70, shot himself to death. His body was found in the bathroom of an apartment. Hargrove said he would not release a cause of death on the victims until autopsies were completed.

Gulfport Police Chief Alan Weatherford told WLOX-TV that the victims were Karen Ferguson, 45, and her son, Trevor Ferguson. Buckman was arrested in July on a molestation charge that Weatherford said involved the Ferguson family. He did not provide further details. Buckman had been free on $50,000 bond.

A neighbor told WLOX that she saw Buckman in the Ferguson home after the woman’s 5-year-old son ran to her house, crying and screaming “the bad man who hurt my brother” was now hurting his mother.

When police arrived a short time later, Ferguson and her older son were both dead.
