ABERDEEN – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department is spending the weekend on a search and rescue mission.
Sheriff Cecil Cantrell said Saturday afternoon several agencies combined efforts to search for human remains that a Smithville woman said could be in the woods.
That woman, Peggy Hall, was arrested Jan. 17 and later charged with attempted murder. Cantrell said she admitted William Phillips, of Amory and who was last seen June 4, was murdered and dumped in the Monroe County woods by another man.
“We’ve been in the woods today,” Cantrell said Saturday while in the Hatley and Detroit Road area. “We have two separate dog teams out and we’re looking for any clues.”
He said there were about 40 people searching land and water. So far all they found were bones of deer, and “I wish I could tell you differently,” Cantrell said.
