Mooreville's Heitger top Lee parent

SHANNON – When Lorrie Heitger’s oldest child entered kindergarten in 2007, she decided to become involved with her daughter’s school to learn more about it.
Nearly five years later, she has found a passion for education.
“When she started kindergarten, I wanted to know what she was being taught in school and I wanted to support her teachers,” said Heitger, who now has children in second and fourth grades at Mooreville Elementary. “The more involved you are, the more you understand the educational process.”
Heitger was named the Lee County School District’s Parent of the Year during a school board meeting at Shannon High School on Thursday. The district also honored the Parents of the Year for each of its individual schools.
“It means a lot to me to be recognized, not for me or my glory, but to bring recognition to the school and its teachers for all they do,” she said.
Heitger is the parent involvement coordinator for Mooreville Elementary School, a task that requires her to invite, inform and educate parents on the school’s mission and to raise money for the school. She also coordinates the school’s Box Tops program, which raises money for the school.
Heitger supports the Accelerated Reader Program by reading to and with students, and she also serves as a substitute teacher.
“She is a great asset to our school,” said Mooreville Elementary Principal Joanna Peugh. “She is always present and willing to do whatever we need. She is a joy to have in school.”
The time that she has spent helping Mooreville Elementary School has also incited a dream to return to school and one day earn her teaching license. She has been instructing Mooreville Elementary School’s After School Enrichment Drama Club and hopes to one day teach a drama/theater program at the school.
“I want our elementary school students to have a chance to know the arts and drama,” said Heitger, who is also involved with Pied Piper Playhouse in Tupelo.
She and her husband, Tim, have two daughters. Kaylee is 10 years old, and Michaela is 7.
