JACKSON — A judge has been asked to lift a stay on a wrongful death lawsuit filed over the 2008 shooting death of a Jackson man by a store clerk.
The clerk, Sarbrinder Pannu, allegedly shot James Hawthorne Jr. after he ran out of the store with beer without paying for it.
The motion seeks to lift the February stay imposed by Hinds County Circuit Judge Winston Kidd. Hawthorne’s relatives want the civil lawsuit filed against Pannu to proceed.
The Clarion-Ledger reports that Pannu’s murder trial was continued May 18 and on at least two previous occasions. It was set for Aug. 2 but last week was continued to Sept. 20.
