MPA hosts forums for some gov, lt. gov candidates

JACKSON — Mississippi politics heats up this weekend as some candidates for governor and lieutenant governor appear before the state’s newspaper editors and publishers.

The Mississippi Press Association is sponsoring a gubernatorial forum Friday with Republicans Phil Bryant and Dave Dennis, and Democrats Johnny DuPree and Bill Luckett.

MPA hosts a forum Saturday for the two Republicans running for lieutenant governor, Billy Hewes and Tate Reeves. No Democrat is running.

Both sessions take place during MPA’s summer convention at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi.

Three other Republicans, two other Democrats, one independent and one Reform Party candidate also are running for governor. One Reform Party candidate also is running for lieutenant governor. They were not invited to speak at the MPA gathering.

Party primaries are Aug. 2.
