Tyler Russell’s debut was good enough to earn the SEC’s Freshman of the Week honor.
Russell, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound redshirt freshman, completed 13 of 16 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns in Mississippi State’s 49-7 season-opening win over Memphis on Saturday.
In his first series, Russell directed a 91-yard scoring drive, completing 3 of 3 passes for 51 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown strike to Brandon Heavens. His other three TD passes came in the second half.
Offensive Player of the Week was Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, who leads the Tigers into Starkville on Thursday (6:30 p.m., ESPN).
