Mississippi State senior Jarvis Varnado, who helped the Bulldogs pull out a couple of close wins last week, was named the SEC Player of the Week on Monday.
In Thursday’s 82-80 victory against Arkansas, the 6-foot-9 Varnado recorded his second career triple-double – and just the fourth in school history – with 17 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks. Two days later, he had 14 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks in a 72-69 comeback win against Georgia.
For the season, Varnado leads MSU with 14.1 points, 11.2 rebounds and 5.3 blocks per game. His rebounding total is tops in the SEC, and his blocks total leads the nation.
Varnado is the second Bulldog to win the Player of the Week award this season. Junior Ravern Johnson won it Dec. 14.
MSU returns to action Saturday at Alabama (11 a.m., CBS).
