TUPELO – The Oxford man accused of killing a Lafayette County man in April also faces felony charges in Lee County.
Douglas Wayne Jones, 21, was arrested by deputy U.S. marshals in Louisiana on Monday. He is wanted in connection with the April 1 beating death of 69-year-old Derald “Pete” Connell during a home invasion.
Four other men have been arrested and charged in the death. Jones is expected to be returned to Lafayette County in the next 10 days, according to Christopher Felix with the U.S. Marshal’s Service in Oxford.
Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson said Lee County authorities have been looking for Jones since 2008 when he was accused of the sexual battery of a 15-year-old girl.
“We’re glad the suspect has been caught,” said Johnson.
Johnson said that even if Jones is convicted of Connell’s murder, he will be prosecuted on the sexual battery charges.
Felix said an investigation by the U.S. Marshal’s Service and the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department produced information that Jones may have gone to Louisiana after the man’s death. A lead was sent to the U.S. Marshal’s Office in western Louisiana, which arrested him without incident Monday.
