Name: John “Mac” Curlee III.
Position: Newly named principal of Tupelo High School.
Family: Wife, Martha Lewis Curlee; daughter, Elizabeth, 21, and son John, 19, both students at the University of Mississippi in Oxford.
Education: Bachelor’s of science degree in education from Delta State University in 1971; a master’s degree in education from the University of Mississippi; enrolled in a doctoral program in school administration at Mississippi State University.
Experience: Twenty years of experience in education, including 15 as a high school principal. He has been principal at Forest High School, Pearl High School and Booneville High School. He has also worked as head football coach and teacher at Ripley High School, assistant director of student activities at Itawamba Community College, field representative for the Department of Education Leadership at Ole Miss and as executive director of the Public Education Forum in Mississippi.
Honors: Received the Principal of the Year Award from the Mississippi Association of Secondary School Principals and the Educator of the Year Award from the Mississippi Department of Education and Milken Family Foundation. He has been a task force member with the Committee on Accountability for the Mississippi Public Education Forum and with the State Superintendent’s Task Force on Administrator Certification and Preparation.
Hobbies: Jogging and walking, particularly with his family.
