TUPELO – Ward 4 Councilwoman Nettie Davis got the biggest birthday party she’s had in all of her 69 years on Saturday.
About three dozen people attended Nettie Davis Day, in honor of her birthday, at the Green Street Grove, a park she spearheaded on North Green Street near her home.
Because of the job she has done for the city and community during her years on the Tupelo City Council, Andrew Myrick, known to most as Shea Butter Man, said he decided it was time for Davis to have her day.
“She is very needed in our community and city,” said Myrick. “So God put it in my heart to do this to honor her. Mrs. Nettie has done so much for everyone here that we just wanted to take a day out to say thank you and we appreciate you.”
Davis, who is in her third term as councilwoman, said the sentiment was overwhelming.
“You hear people say all the time they appreciate what you do, but you just never really know,” she said. “Well, today I know and I appreciate the people just as much as they appreciate me.”
Ward 1 Councilman Markel Whittington attended the park picnic.
“Nettie taught both of my boys so we go back a long way,” said Whittington. “She deserves this. She has meant so much to this ward and to Tupelo as a whole. I have learned so much from her in this my first term on the board. I’m glad to see her being honored this way.”
A black-tie event also was held at St. Paul Life Center on Saturday night. Money collected during the event went toward paying for food and other things for the festivities, according to Myrick.
