New Albany to host chili cook-off, Halloween party

NEW ALBANY – Two favorite fall events – Halloween and chili cook-offs – are coming together for one big party in downtown New Albany this weekend.
The city is hosting a Halloween carnival and chili cook-off on Saturday.
“The chili cook-off will have teams from across the area – organizations, businesses, restaurants and individuals – and we’ll have a booth decorating contest,” said Vickie Duke with New Albany Main Street. Ten teams have already signed up, she said.
The carnival includes plenty of games for kids, along with hayrides, ambulance and fire truck tours and face painting by students in the high school’s art department.
“It’s glamorous and gory face painting,” Duke said, “so it’s more than your average face painting. They can make you look glamorous or they can make it look like you have something coming out of your face.”
The hayrides are courtesy of Wise Farms, and will start at the entrance of Regions Bank in New Albany, Duke said.
Sugaree’s Bakery will have a cookie decorating and coloring contest, said owner Mary Jennifer Russell.
The New Albany High School step team kicks off entertainment at 4 p.m.
A costume contest will hit the stage at 4:30, with categories for adults, kids, pets and groups. The Partlow Drummers will follow, with bluesman Kenny Brown wrapping up the night at 6:30 p.m.
Duke said she hopes families will come out for the cook-off and carnival as an alternative to normal door-to-door trick-or-treating.
“We’ll have candy at all the games,” she said. “It’s a safe, fun environment.”
