JACKSON – A new Mississippi law is designed to make some budget information more readily available to the general public.
Senate Bill 2561 becomes law July 1.
It says that if House or Senate staffers prepare a memo about the potential budget impact of any piece of legislation, that memo — called a fiscal note — must be published on the legislative website, along with the bill.
Fiscal notes are not prepared for all bills. Generally, they’re written for bills that propose big changes, such as a restructuring of school programs.
Until now, fiscal notes generally have been available upon request inside the Capitol but haven’t been widely distributed.
Gov. Phil Bryant signed the bill this past Thursday.
