NEW SITE – A New Site man was released from the Prentiss County Sheriff’s Department Monday on a $50,000 bond set after he allegedly shot his daughter twice during a weekend dispute.
Ronny Gene Eaton, 44, Route 1, Box 382, New Site, was charged with aggravated assault. He is accused of shooting his 21-year-old daughter Melissa Eaton in the arm and head with a .22-caliber rifle.
Melissa Eaton was in the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, also known as The Med, on Monday, listed in stable condition.
The incident started at the Eatons’ New Site home about 12:45 p.m. Saturday.
Prentiss County investigator Gene Gilley said Melissa Eaton came to the Sheriff’s Department to request an escort to her home so that she could remove some of her personal belongings.
When the deputy and Melissa Eaton arrived, her father, who Gilley said was hiding in a wooded area on the side of the family’s brick home, opened fire on his daughter, according to the report filed.
After Melissa Eaton was shot, Gilley said the deputy dragged her back to the car while her father continued to fire his weapon.
An exact number of shots fired was not available. Gilley estimated that about four or five shots were fired.
Gilley did not release a possible cause for the shooting or say why Melissa Eaton had requested a police escort to her home.
