NEW SITE – The New Site Lady Royals have become very familiar with the Big House in Jackson, having made the trek three seasons in a row. Now, they’ve qualified for a fourth straight trip to the MHSAA state tournament.
Friday night, the Lady Royals shot out of the gates in their Class 2A North semifinal against the Mound Bayou JF Kennedy Lady Hornets and rolled to a 75-52 win. Junior Christy Clark poured in 36 points and Morgan Pearson added 29 to put the Lady Royals in position to claim their fourth straight North state title tonight.
“They came to play,” said New Site coach Byron Sparks of his scoring duo. “We have other girls that can score, but they were just getting it done.”
Back-to- back 3-pointers by Pearson gave the Lady Royals a 17-2 lead with 2:14 to play in the first quarter.
When Pearson wasn’t scoring, it was Clark doing the damage. Her 21st point of the first half gave the Lady Royals a 41-16 advantage. Pearson’s 18th point of the half sent the Lady Royals to the locker room with a 43-18 halftime cushion.
Ieysaha Mays led the Lady Hornets (21-8) with 20 points.
The Lady Royals (27-4) will face the Walnut Wildcats for the Class 2A North title tonight at 7 p.m.
WALNUT 48, BRUCE 42: Becky Robinson scored 17 points and Presley Pulse added 15 points to help the Lady Wildcats (25-7) advance to their first state tournament since 1997.
However, Walnut coach Larry Tribble isn’t ready to celebrate just yet.
“This is what the kids have wanted since they were seventh and eighth graders and it’ll be a fun trip for everyone, but we’re not satisfied. We want to win the North Half,” said Tribble. “We know how good New Site is, but we’re going to give it our best shot.”
Tiesa Steen led Bruce (15-11) with 15 points.
