OXFORD – Oxford’s latest publishing enterprise – The Oxford Enterprise – hit the streets Sunday after a three-week marathon of organization, hiring, ad sales, reporting and printing.
The Sunday-only newspaper is published by Scott Coopwood’s family of businesses, which also publishes Delta Magazine, Delta Business Journal and another Sunday-only newspaper, the Cleveland Courant.
“We have a small publishing company, and we want to expand,” Coopwood said. “Oxford seemed like a logical place to go: It didn’t have a Sunday paper, I’m an Ole Miss graduate, and one of our best salesmen for Delta Magazine lives in Oxford.”
The plan is to distribute some 10,000 copies free for several weeks before transitioning to paid circulation.
While interns and freelance writers play significant roles, several staff names are familiar in publishing circles. Executive Editor Melissa Townsend has been the editor of Delta Magazine since its launch. Editor Rick Hynum is a former Daily Journal reporter and former editor of the Ole Miss Alumni Review. Managing Editor Sandra Knispel is best known to Mississippians in her former reporting job with Mississippi Public Broadcasting.
Coopwood said his new venture will complement the town’s established media.
“I did not go into Oxford thinking that I’m going to go head to head with the Oxford Eagle,” he said. “I think a weekend paper is a little more featurey. We’re pretty good at that, coming from the magazine business.”
