New Year, new baby: Carmon McKynli Childers is Tupelo’s first baby in 2012

TUPELO – Little Carmon McKynli Childers let her parents ring in the new year, and then decided it was time to make her debut.
Her parents, Carla and Joey, were celebrating New Year’s Eve and didn’t think that in seven hours their daughter – whose due date was Jan. 9 – would be born.
“We’d just left (Carla’s) parents’ house, and her mom had said, ‘You’ll be a dad today,” Joey said. “Right after we watched the ball drop, we were on our way here.”
Kynli, as she’ll be called, weighs 7 pounds, 1 ounce and measures 18 and 3/4 inches. She is the couple’s first child.
The baby’s name is something her parents made a final decision on several hours after the birth. Joey picked her sentimental first name, and Carla picked her middle name.
“Carmon is my father’s first name. He’s 78, and we just learned he has lung cancer and it has spread to his brain. His first chemo treatment is this week,” Joey said. “It’s unique, and there’s a lot of feeling behind that.”
Carla said she wanted something different for her middle name, so she went with an unusual name with an unusual spelling.
“I heard of a woman who named her daughter that about seven years ago, and it just stuck with me,” she said.
Kynli, who spent a while on Sunday sleeping on her mom’s chest, is a healthy baby.
“She’s been a blessing. She’s very healthy, and she’s done well,” Carla said.
As the first New Year’s baby, the Childerses received a basket full of gifts from Tupelo merchants. Gifts included a teddy bear, piggy bank and diapers, and gift cards to area restaurants.
As new parents, Carla and Joey were all smiles – with a few nervous grins.
“We’re excited and scared and nervous and happy and all those emotions that come with being a first-time parent,” Joey said.
The pair are even already planning Kynli’s future birthday parties.
“We can’t have pool parties,” Joey said, “but maybe we can have New Year’s Eve parties and transition into birthday parties.”
