No charges in death of 2-year-old in Sardis

SARDIS — Authorities say the May 31 death of a 2-year-old has been ruled an accident.

Sardis Police Chief John Deal tells WMC-TV in Memphis that no charges will be filed in the death of A-niyah Thomas-Farmer. The child died after being run over by a car in her grandmother’s driveway.

Deal says the decision came after the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation completed its investigation.

Authorities say an unidentified 11-year-old was sitting in the driver’s seat and A-niyah was in the passenger seat. They were listening to the radio, when the gear somehow shifted and girl fell out the car and was run over.

Deal says the boy tried to grab the girl and stop the car but failed to do either.
