Nonprofit organizes churches for disaster relief

TUPELO – A Christian relief organization will offer churches the chance to assist families affected by the April tornadoes today.
Adopt A Family formed last month and, according to organizers, more than 40 congregations have attended the first two informational meetings.
During the 10 a.m. meeting at Tupelo First Baptist Church, congregations can sign on for a 12-month journey. Throughout the year those churches will provide spiritual support to storm victims and do everything possible to help them rebuild their homes.
According to Steve Tybor, a member of the nonprofit’s leadership team, some 100 families have asked to be adopted, and over the next two weeks, volunteers will continue interviewing those families, collecting stories so that churches will know who they’re assisting.
The final chance for churches to adopt will come July 9 during a 10 a.m. meeting at First Baptist. Adopt A Family welcomes contributions of time, talents and resources, and financial donations may be made through CREATE Inc.
