OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — The Third Circuit Drug Court will conduct its first graduation ceremony at 2 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Lafayette County Courthouse in Oxford.

Mississippi Supreme Court Justice Ann H. Lamar will speak. Circuit Judge Andrew K. Howorth will preside.

Eight people are expected to graduate. Six are from Lafayette County and two are from Marshall County.

Drug courts seek to rehabilitate drug-using offenders through drug treatment and intense supervision with frequent court appearances and random drug testing. Drug courts offer the incentive of a chance to remain out of jail and be employed and the sanction of a prison sentence if participants fail to remain drug-free and in compliance with all program requirements.

The drug court serves Lafayette, Marshall, Benton, Calhoun, Chickasaw, Tippah and Union counties.
