Northgate dorm underway on Ole Miss campus

county_lafayette_green OXFORD – The latest in a series of new student residences at the University of Mississippi is underway near the Northgate entrance to the campus.

The yet-to-be-named facility will accommodate 304 students and is scheduled for substantial completion in July 2015, with the official opening in August 2015.

“This is just basically one building similar to the three buildings in The Ridges,” Associate University Architect Chad Hunter said, referring to dormitories on Rebel Drive that opened in 2012. “We had a little lull between The Ridges and this project.”

The Northgate-area residence isn’t the only one in the pipeline.

“We’re actually working on the programming and planning for a new 600- to 650-bed residence complex just west of The Ridges,” Hunter said. That complex will replace Guess Hall and is scheduled to open in August 2016.

Two major renovations on the Ole Miss campus are near opposite ends of the completion spectrum. The former law school, Lamar Hall, has undergone an extensive renovation to transform it into academic space for the College of Liberal Arts and associated programs. It has its first occupants already, and this fall it will house classrooms along with offices for the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, the Center for Writing and Rhetoric, the Writing Center, the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation, the Center for Population Studies, the Center for Archaeological Research and the McLean Institute for Public Service and Community Engagement.

Three 1930s-era buildings that were dormitories until a few years ago are now being planned for renovation into academic and administrative office space. Garland, Hedleston and Mayes – commonly known as GHM – sit west of Johnson Commons.

The low ceilings, structural confinement and limited bathroom facilities don’t meet contemporary standards for student housing, Hunter said, but suffice for office spaces.

The GHM renovation is budgeted at $14 million in state funds, but a timetable has not been set for the project. It will include replacing roofs, restoring windows, providing ADA accessibility and elevators to all levels, making buildings life-safety code compliant (fire protection, egress, alarms, smoke detection), replacing all building systems and upgrading interiors.
