Not guilty pleas in Rankin Co. burglary, slaying

BRANDON, Miss. (AP) — A judge has entered not guilty pleas for two men charged with capital murder and burglary in what a Rankin County prosecutor called an “execution-style killing.”

Rankin County Judge Kent McDaniel on Tuesday also set a preliminary hearing for Oct. 18 for 36-year-old Walter Burton and 30-year-old Jermaine Tyler.

The men are charged in the Sept. 27 slaying of 37-year-old Leslie Sheppard Doame. Authorities say Doame was shot once in the head in her parents’ home south of Brandon.

District Attorney Michael Guest says “it was an execution-style killing” because of the way she was shot.

Rankin County Undersheriff Brian Bailey says robbery was the motive and Daome didn’t know her attackers.

The two men were arrested in Jackson on Saturday.
