Noxubee refuge named for Hamilton

JACKSON — President Obama has signed a bill to name the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge for the late Sam D. Hamilton.

Congress passed the bill in early February. Obama signed the bill Wednesday.

Hamilton, a Starkville native, was sworn in as the 15th director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in September 2009 and was serving in that capacity when he died in February, 2010. He worked for the agency for 30 years.

The Noxubee Refuge covers 48,000 square acres in east central Mississippi and is a resting and feeding area for migratory birds.

U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., sponsored the bill in the Senate and Rep. Gregg Harper did the same in the House.
