WASHINGTON – The House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday approved an amendment offered by Rep. Alan Nunnelee, R-Miss., that expands an existing prohibition against the Federal Employees Health Benefits program providing coverage for abortions.
The amendment, which passed 28-20 during markup of the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill, expands that
prohibition to include multistate health insurance programs administered by the federal government under the new health care law.
“This committee has had a long history of bipartisan agreement of recognizing that taxpayers should not be asked to pay for elective abortions, nor should the taxpayers be paying for health plans that are administering elective abortions,” Nunnelee said.
