Nurses charged with illegally obtaining drugs

OXFORD — Two Oxford nurses have been charged with illegally obtaining controlled substances while on duty.

Attorney General Jim Hood says 55-year-old Debra Hayes and 42-year-old Rhonda Advani turned themselves in to investigators Tuesday after being indicted by the Lafayette County grand jury on one count each for obtaining a controlled substance by means of fraud.

Hood says in a statement that the two were employed by the Graceland Care Center in Lafayette County. He says they are accused of converting to their own use the drug Lortab which had been prescribed for patients.

If convicted, each defendant faces up to five years behind bars and $1,000 in fines.

It was unclear whether the suspects have attorneys.
